Very interesting.
There are some Sephardim who eat black eyed peas on a normal basis. When me and my cousin from Columbia lived in NYC we would have them along with marinated lamb and carrots for Shabbat. If memory serves I have had them also at a Yemenite home. I also think that there are some Cameroonian dishes with Black Eyed Peas.
